Men who can’t get it up even while taking Viagra are advised to check their testosterone levels. In recent studies it was shown that men whose erectile dysfunction problem do not respond after administering Viagra is often caused by low testosterone levels.

Viagra which is also known by its generic name “Sildenafil” aids males in achieving and sustaining penile erection by raising the flow of blood to the penis’ hollow caverns. The lack of flow of blood to the penis is often the number one cause of erectile dysfunctions. However, other causes are also testosterone at low levels which in turn lessens the male’s sex drive resulting to difficulty in getting a standard or normal penile erection. In addition, if testosterone levels are low then even administering or taking Viagra might not help to get the results expected of the drug.

A research study which was published in the BJU International journal stated that Viagra was administered to 162 men from the ages 60 years and older. In the study it was found out that the drug Viagra was only effective to about 47% of the patients. The male patients in whom the Viagra was not effective were mostly due to or attributed to low testosterone levels among the patients. Also it was noted that the males who smoked prior to taking Viagra were having less benefit of penile erection.

The study created an observation that some other factor is contributory in cases where Viagra doesn’t work in achieving normal penis erection. Furthermore, the researchers suggested that in the event of continued erectile dysfunction in males the next option is to have the levels of testosterone checked and have testosterone replacement administered if a lower testosterone level is found.

The recommendations came up after the comparison of the testosterone replacement in males while administering Viagra at the same time between males who were administered Viagra but were not replaced with testosterone. The results showed that the males who received testosterone replacement and administered Viagra had gained better penile erection against those who were not “added” with testosterone.

When testosterone levels are low, it will not only affect the sex life but also the male can have lower levels of energy. Other effects also includes: muscle mass and strength decrease, obesity, depression and irritability.

Lowered testosterone levels are caused by injuries or a few medical conditions like diabetes. Age also plays a role in testosterone levels. After a male reaches the age of 30 his testosterone levels drop by about 10% every 10 years. Testosterone levels can be monitored through a blood test and there are various treatments available to increase hormonal levels. Treatments are available such as pills, gels and patches which have to be worn all the time to imitate the natural testosterone release functions within the bloodstream on a daily basis.

So there is no need to worry if Viagra doesn’t work. You can have the next best item to check and that is your own testosterone level. Be sure also that proper stimulation was met during the actual sexual foreplay.
